New Tour - the MacRobertson Air Race
After writing a huge blog post recounting the history of the MacRobertson Air Race on my personal blog (you can read it here), I have now added the MacRobertson Air Race to the airline tours.
This is a resurrection of a tour that existed before in the airline - however this time I have populated the tour and each of it’s legs with much more information about the original race that took place in 1934.
The tour is only available to the Historic fleet in the airline - which comprises of the DC3 and DC6 at the moment. One of the dark-horses in the real race was the DC2 - the direct ancestor of the DC3.
The tour has 6 legs:
Mildenhall, England to Baghdad, Iraq - 2,195 nm
Baghdad, Iraq to Allalabad, India - 2,006 nm
Allalabad, India to Changi, Singapore - 1,936 nm
Changi, Singapore to Darwin, Australia - 1,803 nm
Darwin, Australia to Charleville, Australia - 1,208 nm
Charleville, Australia to Melbourne, Australia - 680 nm
The time estimates in the tour are based on the DC6, calculated by LittleNavMap - use them as a rough guide.
For added challenge during the tour, try navigating without radio or GPS navigation aids - as the real flight crews would have done.
